We hadn’t run a trip to Littlehampton for a while, so this was rather an experiment. I supplemented the GLUG divers with people from my local BSAC club – all of whom are house-trained.
It turned out to be a splendid weekend, with everyone keen to book for next year. Surprisingly it was flat calm. We did the Armed Trawler first, which was featured in the current Diver Magazine – turns out it’s the HMS Northcoates (didn’t know that before!). We could hardly see the wreck for the fish! The viz was really good and you could get quite a clear idea of the structure of the wreck. There are also crabs, lobsters and congers in the nooks and crannies. Water was an acceptable 14ºC. We then had a gentle drift on a reef near the Waldrons and my computer read 18ºC – practically bath temperature. Quite a pleasant bimble amongst the small rocky outcrops – some wrasse, crabs and a few isolated scallops. Very relaxing.
The next day we almost did the HMS Northcoates again, as it had been so good, but opted instead to do the Zaanstrom. Water was slightly choppier than the day before, but bearable. This is a large wreck – intact but caved in. Another stunning dive – crabs, some huge pollack, bib and some really pretty jewel anemones along the side of the wreck. Next we did a drift on the Waldrons – must have been one of the prettiest drifts I’ve done. Large rocks covered in coral, crabs, wrasse and a few scallops.
