UK
An introduction to UK diving
Whilst cold water diving can be more challenging than tropical diving it is also very rewarding. UK waters offer world-class wreck dives and marine life which is vastly different to that encountered in warmer areas.
Drysuits are the norm for UK diving. Divers who have only used wetsuits in the past would need to receive supplementary training in the use of a drysuit before being allowed to dive with one in open water. GLUG members can get drysuit-qualified through Dorothy Divers (our affiliated BSAC club). Alternatively most UK PADI dive schools offer drysuit training.
Divers who are not yet drysuit-qualified can still sample UK diving during the late summer when water temperatures in Wales and along the south coast of England are a little warmer. From July through to August a good 7mm semi-dry, gloves and a hood would keep a hardy diver warm enough to enjoy their dives. We try to arrange a few UK trips each year that would suit divers who are not drysuit-qualified and who are new to coldwater diving – many of our members have had their introduction to UK diving in this way.
