Training

About Training with GLUG

GLUG is a Dive Club, rather than a Dive School, but because of the rising number of training enquiries, we have now appointed two committee members to help you to find the right training. Although their role is aimed at new divers, qualified divers are also welcome to ask for information about further qualifications – just email Ian & Martin: .

GLUG welcomes members from all diving organisations, although the majority of our members seem to be either PADI or BSAC qualified. We therefore aim to offer easier access to training with these two organisations, however we can also offer advice about training with other organisations such as NAUI, SSI, and SAA as well as transitioning between agencies.

We have split the information into separate pages for BSAC training and PADI training.

As a comparison, we’ve put together this table summarising the two main training agencies:

  PADI BSAC
Training Through individual PADI Instructors or through a PADI school. Short courses over two or three days. Specialist qualifications may take longer. Courses can be taken over a time scale to suit student. Mainly club-based over several weeks
Membership Fees None £45.50 to Central organisation, plus local club fee (£5 for Dorothy Divers – most clubs charge much more!) You also have to be a GLUG member (additional £10)
Courses Pay for each course Instruction is free – just pay for trainer’s and own expenses (e.g. pool fees, air fills, transport to Open Water sites), plus course materials (£30)
Time Frame Qualification possible within 5 days Can take a couple of weeks, or considerably longer, depending on the club.
Location UK or overseas (or a combination: Theory in UK, Dives overseas) All training takes place in UK or can take place at a BSAC school overseas
Training with GLUG Flexible courses can be completed over a weekend or split over several days if time is an issue.Weekends/mid week trips available; annual training holidays – subject to demand Training with Dorothy Divers – GLUG’s own branch of BSAC
