Too cold to dive…why not consider skiing?

Posted by Ray (the chef) on December 23rd, 2006

If anyone is interested in going skiing over the winter (perhaps late March-to Austrian Alps) then drop me a line by email…all parties whether experienced or beginner are welcome. May be regular winter event if popular.
Good apres ski fun and toning the muscles up for the new diving season.

Merry xmas to all from the “Guerns” and “good diving” in 07!
Regards:
Ray (the “Chef”)

Xmas Meal Reminder

Posted by Neil on November 27th, 2006

Alesh tells me that so far he has around 20 people for the Xmas Meal.

If you’re planning on coming along and haven’t yet registered, don’t forget that we need names and menu choices by Monday December 4th at the latest. Meal details are in the original post.

Also, if you sent an email but didn’t get any reply from Alesh, please send him another one - or send it to me (click on the envelope at the top of the post when you’re logged in, or send it using the Contact Form, choosing “Website problems”). Your place is not confirmed until you receive an email from Alesh.

Finally, don’t forget that if you’ve registered, then you’re liable for the cost of the meal, whether or not your turn up - so if your plans have changed, and you can’t now make it, please email again.

GLUG Christmas Meal

Posted by Neil on November 8th, 2006

Xmas DinnerApologies, I made a right mess of the previous posting, so I’ve deleted it, and started again!…

The GLUG Christmas Meal will be at Strada, St Paul’s Churchyard (opposite the Cathedral entrance), at 7pm on Saturday 9th December.

We need bookings in advance, with your choice of Main course and Dessert. The menus are given at the end of this post. There are no limits on numbers so please bring loved ones, friends, relations and potential GLUG members.

The cost of the meal is £28.10 including service, but not including drinks (although if we get sufficient numbers they may throw in some wine). There is also a Vegetarian menu at £18.60 - see below for details.

The final date for booking the meal is Monday 4th December.
Important Note: Although payment is not required in advance, if you book a place for the meal, you will be liable for the cost of the meal, whether or not you actually turn up. (You can cancel your place up until 4th December without penalty)

Please select your choice of Main Course and Dessert from one of the two menus below, and email your choice to Alesh, who is organising the meal, using the Contact Form (select “GLUG Xmas Meal Booking” from the drop-down list). NB: Your booking is not confirmed until you receive a reply from Alesh - and the GLUG emails have a habit of going into his Spam folder, so if you don’t hear back from him, he may have missed it - just try again.

…but before I go…

Posted by Neil on September 15th, 2006

I’ve noticed that only 19 people out of 99 club members have filled in the AGM & Xmas Meal Poll.  If you haven’t already voted, please go to the GLUG Homepage and do so - there’s an option for “I can’t make it”, so even if you’re not coming, please vote.

GLUG AGM 2006

Posted by Neil on September 6th, 2006

Please note that the GLUG Xmas meal (see previous post) will be preceded by the GLUG AGM.

The AGM is your opportunity to tell the committee what you want from the club - and to vote them out if you think they’re not doing a good enough job!  We therefore encourage as many members as possible to attend the AGM - even if they don’t come to the meal.

So, if you plan to come to the AGM, but not the meal, please vote for the date and time you would prefer the AGM on.

(If you can’t make the AGM, you can email any comments/concerns etc. to the committee in advance, and we’ll make sure they’re heard).

GLUG Xmas Meal Poll

Posted by Neil on September 6th, 2006

At last night’s club meeting, it was decided that the GLUG Xmas meal should be on the weekend of the 9th/10th December. The meal will take the place of the monthly meeting.

I’ve added a poll in the right-hand sidebar, where you can vote for your preference of either Saturday evening or Sunday lunchtime (Note: You need to be logged in to the site to vote). We need your vote ASAP, since once we have the date we still have to find a location!

Xmas Meal reminder - Act now!!

Posted by Neil on November 14th, 2005

So far Gerhard has only had 12 members contact him about the Xmas meal on December 3rd. We have to tell the restaurant the exact number by this Friday (18th), so if you want to come, but haven’t yet told Gerhard - do it now. You can find Gerhard’s contact details on the Events Page when you’ve logged in.

You can find the full details of the Meal and AGM in this post.

GLUG AGM & Xmas Meal

Posted by Neil on November 2nd, 2005

Gay Santa

The GLUG AGM and Christmas Meal will take place on Saturday 3rd December.

The AGM is being hosted by Gerhard at his house near Waterloo, followed by the Christmas Meal at EV, 2 minutes walk away, behind Southwark station.

Konditor and Cook
will be providing Mince Pies and Mulled Wine for the AGM, and Gerhard will be asking for donations to The Food Chain (suggested amount £5).

EV is a Turkish Restaurant, and part of the Tas chain (where GLUG has enjoyed several Xmas meals in the past). According to the Time Out Eating Guide, “It’s beautifully run, thoroughly professional and the inventive modern Turkish food is delicious, imaginative and keenly priced.”

We’ve decided to go for their Menu 2 option, at £22.50 per person (drinks other than water are extra). Including Wine and Service Charge, it should come to around £33-35 per person.
Gerhard will be asking for a £20 per person deposit, and if everyone could try to bring cash to the restaurant for the balance, it will make life easier!

The AGM will start at 4.30pm, which should give us enough time to cover everything before the Meal, which is booked for 7.00pm. An agenda will be published shortly.

All are welcome to come along for either the AGM, or the Xmas Meal, or both.

We need numbers for the meal no later than November 18th, so if you want to join us, please contact Gerhard ASAP (Members can find his details on the Events Page after logging in).

If you’re planning on coming just to the AGM, it would be useful for Gerhard to know numbers for that as well.

At present I have 15 deposits paid - see this post for the names.

You can also download the menu.

AGM & Xmas Meal Reminder

Posted by Neil on November 19th, 2004

So far, I have 13 names on the list for the GLUG Xmas Meal.
It would be nice to have a few more - thirteen’s unlucky, after all!
If your name’s not on the list, then I haven’t received your deposit.

At present, no-one has told me of any special dietary requirements (e.g. vegetarian only, etc.), so I’m assuming that everyone’s happy with the Sample Menu
How to pay the deposit, and details of the time & place

Also, any members who are planning to come to the AGM, but not the meal, please let me know (log in, then click my name at the top of this post to send an email), so that we know roughly how much space we’ll need.

Finally, another plea for members to volunteer for committee posts. So far, (taking into account new names, and existing committee members who have confirmed they will stand again), I only have names for 3 of the posts.

With only 3 committee members, it’s doubtful whether the club could function, despite having over 130 members. Hopefully the 13 names for the meal are not an omen that this will be the club’s Last Supper!

Posts without nominations:
Chairperson
Overseas Dives Coordinator
Membership Secretary
Newsletter Editor
Equipment Officer

Posts with nominations:
Treasurer - Alan Larsen
Publicity Officer - Kirk Wylie
UK Dives Coordinator - Corinne Sarjeant

Neil.

– update 20/11/04 –
Two more people have paid deposits, so we’re over that unlucky 13 hurdle!

– update 26/11/04 –
I’ve decided to nominate myself for Newsletter Editor.

GLUG Christmas Menu

Posted by Neil on November 12th, 2004

I’ve received the Sample Xmas Menu from the Lye Torng Restaurant. (You’ll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to read it).

The food for the GLUG Xmas Meal will be as listed, or something very similar. As you can see, it all looks delicious! There will also be a generous bar tab, which should cover wine with the meal, and drinks from the bar. Any money left over from the bar tab will be donated to The Food Chain.

Any vegetarians, please let me know when sending your deposit - the Lye Torng can provide some other vegetarian dishes for you.

Likewise, if anyone has special dietary requirements please let me know, and I’ll see what can be arranged.

I need deposits by December 1st - see this post for details of how to pay.
