Members Profile System

This help pages deals with the Members Only, Members Profile System feature.

The feature is intended to provide members with the ability to see details about other club members and potentially network with them away from official club events and meetings. It also provides an easy way for newer members to put names to faces and see who is actually in the club.

 Are my details available?

No, not unless you have specifically chosen to make your details visible to other members. The default is that non of your details, even your existence, are make known. You are and remain in full control of what is made available.

How do I control what is displayed?

Visit you user profile by logging into the site, using the ‘Members area’ link in the left margin and selecting ‘Your Profile’ in the Users section.

The master control is located at the bottom of the page and is title ‘Public Visibility’:

The option available are:

  • Nothing – You will NOT show up in the profile system at all (default)
  • Basic Details – You will appear in list results and basic details about you will be available on your profile page.
Your personal description, general location, diving experience etc will be shown.
  • Picture – Adds your image(s) as a gallery slide show to your profile page.
  • Full details – Reveals your occupation, website and profiles on other sites.
  • Contact Details – Adds your registered email address and messenger IDs to your profile page.

The other significant control is the ‘Show Real Name’ control. This, as the name suggests, determine whether your real name is visible within the profile system.

Please Note: This setting ONLY affects how you appear within the profile system. The Display Name chosen near the top of the page will be used in all other cases, e.g. on posts you author.

To protect your privacy, if you do not opt to reveal you real name, your profile will not be returned as a result where searches only match your real name. This aims to prevent members identifying you by searching for your name and narrowing the search to one result.

Adding details

There are notes on the page to aid filling in the newer fields. When a field asks for ‘one entry per line’, hit return at the end of each line EXCEPT the last.

Also note the file size limit for images uploaded to the GLUG site, if your images aren’t appearing, then the file size is too large. If, once uploaded they don’t fit on the page, they need to be reduced in size (image size) using a image package.

Can I preview my profile?

Yes, at the bottom of the page there is a link which will open your profile page in a new window so you can see how your profile will appear to other members. You MUST save your changes first, otherwise their effect won’t be seen!

Using the system to find people

Perhaps the more exciting bit if we’re honest! Visit the ‘Member profiles’ page from the main menu (while logged in!) to view a full list of all participating club member’ profiles. The basic summary details and 1st gallery image are shown in thumbnail format.

This list can be searched and sorted using the controls at the top of the page.

To view more details of a particular member, click anywhere on their listing (the pink highlight should on most browsers follow your cursor). this will open a new window where all the member’s details are available complete with a rotating set of images if present. Much like other social networking sites we may be familiar with!

Links to websites, external profiles and email addresses are all click-able on the profile pages.
