| Combine Diving and safari on this action packed trip. The price includes ALL flights, international ( Emirates) and internal, all transfer costs and dives and wait for it...and excess baggage allowance too! Yes, you can take up to 40kg and that's INCLUDED in the price. The only extras will be your drinks and some of the meals you choose to eat away from the itinerary! This is a stunning trip, a once in a lifetime opportunity not to be missed! I've been working with named people from company called African Space. They have all their own staff, have lived and worked in Africa themselves and have built some of their own camps themselves, so we know that all kit, boats and vehicles are serviced and well looked after, most of it was replaced last year! Some of you met Jamie when he came to give a presentation last month. This is a truly spectacular trip and not to be missed! The Trip Day 1 01/03/12 Forget winter winds and dark nights for today you are flying to Africa. Just say it to yourself: it sounds good. Lie back, watch a film and anticipate the two weeks that lie ahead. Day 2 02/03/12 Arrive in Cape Town; a city often described as a little bit of the Mediterranean in Africa. This is a relaxed city with so much on offer. Whether shopping, restaurants, bars, helicopter trips or historical visits are your thing, Cape Town has something for everyone, all set against a landscape of outstanding natural beauty. Met at the airport by your African Space guide, you will leave the city, taking the beautiful drive east along the coast, through hill sides covered by vineyards, to the small fishing village of Gansbaai. Here you will stay at Aire del Mar, enjoying the local hospitality and wondering just how you will respond tomorrow when a great white shark comes to greet you ..... personally. AIRE DEL MAR - OVERNIGHT STAY & BREAKFAST Day 3 03/03/12 Waking early, you will have breakfast (not too much, it may be choppy!) and then receive a briefing from the resident marine biologist on the ecology and behaviour of the white shark. Then it is a short walk to the harbour and your boat. All kit is provided, so you will be warm and safe, all you have to do is enjoy the experience. Dive 1 is just you, a cage and some very large sharks. When back on shore, you will return to Cape Town, on the way visiting the charismatic penguins of Boulders Beach before progressing on to Cape Point: the place where two oceans meet, a whole continent is at your back and the wind is no friend to elaborate hair styles. The evening is yours to spend as you wish. Enjoy! THE GRAND DADDY HOTEL - OVERNIGHT STAY & BREAKFAST - 1 GW SHARK EXPERIENCE Day 4 04/03/12 Back in the water, Dive 2 is a trip out to one of the seal colonies found on the coast along from the city. These marine gymnasts are curious creatures, always willing to engage. In fact, in part, the length of the dive will depend on how confident they become; we like to return to the boat with most of our fins left intact. THE GRAND DADDY HOTEL - OVERNIGHT STAY & BREAKFAST - SEAL DIVE Day 5 05/03/12 Today you fly northeast from Cape Town to Durban, the vibrant heart of KwaZuluNatal. There we will transfer into vehicles and drive north, out of the city, through the green fields of sugar cane and into the bushveld of Zululand. Africa just got a little wilder. The journey will last for approximately five hours, but, with breaks and a good road, it will fly by. Your destination is Sodwana Bay and the lodge of the same name, a place where forests meet sandy beach and your access point to the most southerly tropical reefs in Africa. Hello warm water diving! SODWANA BAY LODGE - BREAKFAST & DINNER Day 6 06/03/12 Sodwana Bay is a place of great marine diversity with over 20 beautiful dive sites and a host of large pelagic visitors. Look out for the whale sharks. Join the turtles floating over the reef. Get close up for a bit of macro action. You will spend three days here, so enjoy and make the most of it. (Dive 3 and Dive 4) Some of the more distant reefs do require a surcharge payment, but it is worth it. SODWANA BAY LODGE - BREAKFAST & DINNER - DIVES 3 & 4 Day 7 07/03/12 Back in the boats and confidently enjoying the surf launch, you will spend the day diving whichever of the reefs our local guides are confident will give you the best diving experience. (Dive 5 and Dive 6.) However, should you want a break from diving, it will be possible to arrange other excursions, not included in your package, such as quad biking, horse riding and even a flight over the bay in a micro-light (weather permitting). SODWANA BAY LODGE - BREAKFAST & DINNER - DIVES 5 & 6 Day 8 08/03/12 After an early breakfast and a final dive (Dive 7), you will leave Sodwana and drive through Mkuze Game Reserve to Pongola Game Reserve and the White Elephant Bush Camp, a little-known haven on the shores of Lake Jozini. This is a place to relax, enjoy the wildlife, or just absorb the peace of the place - while eating like a king. Arriving in time for the afternoon game drive, you will be taken out into the reserve, hopefully to find the famous 'red elephants'. WHITE ELEPHANT SAFARI LODGE - FULL BOARD - DIVE 7 & SAFARI ACTIVITY Day 9 09/03/12 Waking early, while it is still cool, you will be taken out onto Lake Jozini, to view the reserve from the water and try to spot as many of the over 300 bird species resident in the area. Then it is back to the camp for a lazy breakfast, before retreating from the heat of the day. As the sun drops, you have the opportunity to go out on an evening game drive and watch as the creatures of the reserve prepare for the night. Or perhaps you would prefer to take a walk with a ranger and learn more about the little things of equal importance to life in the bush. WHITE ELEPHANT SAFARI LODGE - FULL BOARD - 2 ACTIVITIES Day 10 10/03/12 After a final early morning game drive, you are heading south to the coast again. Destination: the Ellingham Resort,in the village of Rocky Bay, near to Umkomaas, entry to Aliwal Shoal, the home of the tiger sharks. It is time to dive again. Sharks and a surf entry are the order of play again, but this time it's for the tigers. Staying at Agulhas House, you will be well fed, watered (!) and as comfortable as you will have grown to expect. ELLING HAM RESORT - OVERNIGHT STAY & BREAKFAST - 1 ACTIVITY Day 11 11/03/12 Tigers. You are diving with the experts, who it is suspected prefer tiger to human company, they spend so much time with them. You will be fully briefed on the ecology and behaviour of these beautiful creatures. The dive briefing will be comprehensive and don't worry: there is no such thing as a stupid question. Launching from the beach, you will break the surf line and head out to the waters of the shoal. Then it is up to Mother Nature. In the afternoon, you will dive cathedral on Aliwal Shoal, a dive known for its raggies. (Dives 8&9) ELLING HAM RESORT - OVERNIGHT STAY & BREAKFAST - DIVES 8 & 9 Day 12 12/03/12 This morning you will make your final two dives, so make the most of them as Africa will normally see you alright with something special for you're the end of the expedition. Relax in the afternoon and prepare for your last night of South African hospitality .... for now. (Dive 10&11) ELLINGHAM RESORT - OVERNIGHT STAY & BREAKFAST - DIVES 10 & 11 Day 13 13/03/12 Today the expedition comes to an end. Leaving Umkomaas, you make the short transfer back to Durban and the international airport for your return flight home. On your way, perhaps drop into the famous uShaka Marine World, south Africa's largest aquarium. Day 14 14/03/12 Land in the UK with great memories and (hopefully) even better photos. Price includes: International Flights from London, 6 nights B&B, 2 nights full board & 3 nights breakfast & dinner; 11 dives, 4 safari activities & all scheduled internal transport. Not included: drinks, tips & gratuities, Sodwana surcharges, non-specified activities, transport to and from non-specified activities. | A mix of cold water diving in Cape Town and warm water diving further up the coast | | Paul, jogilpin, merman |

The trip is suitable for OW divers and will help you gain experience and increase your number of logged cold water dives. None of the dives will be more than 18 metres and first timers will be buddied with someone experienced in UK diving. There will be a mix of wreck and drift diving and we will be diving off a RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat). We will show you some of the skills necessary for UK diving and also increase your awareness of the local flora and fauna, so you can identify your Pollock from your Parrot fish! We will be staying at the Royal Breakwater Hotel and diving with Scimitar diving which is directly opposite the hotel. We had a wonderful experience with them this year and decided to repeat the opportunity. The wreck plan will change depending on tides and weather conditions, but some of the likely dives will be Durdle Door, Black Hawk, British Inventor, Bomardier Unit and Lulworth Banks (yes, we’ll even teach you to dive for scallops!) | Take the first steps in your diving career! Learn the skills you need to SCUBA dive in the safety of a swimming pool. The Open Water course takes place in two parts. Part 1 or the 'Referral Course' consists of two days training, learning the theory of diving and the basic skills necessary to dive. We start you off in water shallow enough to stand up in and then take you into the deep end of the pool once you're comfortable. Once you have mastered these skills and have completed some quizzes you have two choices. You can either complete the course in the UK, or go abroad to finish the course. I am running this course along side the Try Dive, which means there will be BBQ food available between your dives and GLUG members around to offer you support! How luxurious can UK diving be? Please download the .pdf file and read through the questions, if you answer "YES" to any of these, please contact me. It doesn't mean you can't dive, but we need to talk it through first. (Some .pdf readers state the .pdf file has an error, this is because I added my name to the form, there is no bug, or virus and the file IS safe to open) | Warm, non-chlorinated pool in Streatham. | | Andy Singh |

| This trip is designed to give those who have never dived in the UK before, or who want to gain more experience in UK sea diving. The trip is suitable for OW divers and will help you gain experience and increase your number of logged cold water dives. None of the dives will be more than 18 metres and first timers will be buddied with someone experienced in UK diving. There will be a mix of wreck and drift diving and we will be diving off a hard boat with a lift. We will show you some of the skills necessary for UK diving and also increase your awareness of the local flora and fauna, so you can identify your Pollock from your Parrot fish! We will be staying at the Alverstoke Guest House and diving with the Old Harbour Dive Centre, on Extreme. The wreck plan will change depending on tides and weather conditions, but some of the likely dives will be Durdle Door, Black Hawk, British Inventor, Bomardier Unit and Lulworth Banks (yes, we’ll even teach you to dive for scallops!) There is GLUG kit available for those who do not have their own, which is allocated on a first come, first served basis. We do expect you to have your own mask, fins and snorkel and would advise you to wear diving gloves and hoods. Please feel free to ask me for any advice. I look forward to diving with you shortly! Experienced divers who are happy to buddy up and support our less experienced members are also welcome. | Cold water diving. Temperature around 16 -18 degrees at this time of year. Semi dry suits are more than adequate and available to hire from the Old Harbour Dive Centre. You can book your semi dry suits in advance by calling Mary on and quoting GLUG. | | smokiejoe, gixxermatt, hypnotoad, Lisac, flyingfish, strondio, merman, mayday, Gareth, aaron, Canburyman, Jonny82 |

| A weekend of hard boat diving, diving off Tango. This is a trip for experienced cold water divers only. Wreck, Deep and the ability to handle deco would be advantageous. We will be heading to some of the slightly deeper wrecks or perhaps just planning to stay down on some of our favourites a little longer. The Salsette, UB74, M2 have all been requested. The itinerary will be confirmed nearer the time. There is a minimum requirement for 50 cold water dives and a dry suit is essential. | Extend your diving range to 30m and increase your skill level on this two day course. Learn the basics of diving around wrecks, diving deeper, underwater navigation and other skills. You may also combine the dry suit course with this course if you wish. I will teach you how to dive safely and competently in a dry suit and to stay snuggly warm on all your dives. The course allows you to hire a dry suit (no centre will hire a Dry Suit to you without this qualification). Dry suits also equalise your buoyancy as the air is supporting your whole body, not just the chest area in a BCD. Please indicate on the booking form if you wish to combine the two courses. As a special offer for GLUG members, I will reduce the cost of the Dry Suit course for this trip to just £100 (That's £75 off!) Please read the medical statement and contact me if you answer "YES" to any of the questions. It doesn't mean you can't dive, but we need to discuss it first. | Water around 18-22 degrees, depending on the site chosen | | Helen |

| Following the success of last year's trip, I have booked Nemo 33 again! Nemo 33 is a purpose built diving pool with platforms at various levels, including the 33m pit with windows looking out to the restaurant and pressurised bells, so that yes, you can come up for air, chat and head back out on the dive without the need for a safety stop! The pool is filled with filtered spring water and is heated to around 33 degrees, so you can dive in your pants! They also prefer you to use their equipment to prevent muck being brought into the pool, so it’s all included in the hire charge, you just need to bring your own computer. If you don't have one, you can hire one from the centre. The price includes a night in the hotel and a meal at the pool. If you book two dives, you get two meals, and believe me, the food is fantastic! None of your burgers and fries, but Thai curry, drink and a dessert. Truly scrumptious! We stay overnight at the wonderful White Hotel, which is a short taxi ride away from the pool. This trip is ideal for open water divers and above or anyone wanting to dive in a new, purpose built environment and just have some fun underwater. The platforms help you maintain the correct depth and although the pool goes down to 33m, they do NOT allow decompression diving. The trip can also be used to keep your skills up to date out of season, so negates the need for a SCUBA review as you’ll stay within your 6 month period for current dives. The option to dive on day two is yours. You may well prefer to head off and explore Brussels and get some Christmas shopping in. (Hangovers permitting!) We found a wonderful restaurant and a 'local' irish bar last time. On the Sunday afternoon we said our fond fairwells to the the barman in the local gay bar.....what happens in Brussels, stays in Brussels is all I will say on that note ;-) The great thing about this trip is you don’t have to lug your own kit around and there’s no de-fizz time as we’re travelling on Eurostar! We have a group booking on the train, so we can all travel together and the Eurostar takes us to within 20 mins of the pool. What more could you ask? Really looking forward to seeing you all there and chatting in those underwater bells. You never know… I may even teach a mascara application class underwater ;-) Two dives with meal and hotel approx £85 Three dives with meal and hotel approx £110 Cost of train fair £62 This is a great weekend trip away, something a little out of the ordinary and diving into that 33m pit with the bubbles of the divers below all around you is one of those 'must do once in your life' experiences! It's the closest most of us will get to diving in champagne darling! Please make payments into the GLUG trip account, using your surname and the trip number (162) as reference. Thank you. | As you know, it's the club AGM @ 3pm on 3rd December. YOU'RE ALL WELCOME, SO COME ALONG AND TAKE PART IN YOUR CLUB! The meeting will take place and copious amounts of alcohol consumed at the Phoenix Club in soho where we have our monthly meetings. Please do come along to the AGM. It's your opportunity to vote for committee members, have your say about where you want the club to go this year, find out what we have planned and of course, a chance to socialise and catch up with your buddies. We usually head off around 5-5.30 and hit the restaurant where we aim to eat. The food is booked for 7.30pm This year I have booked an area of SWAY, downstairs for our Christmas Party. Sway have a happy hour from 5pm and we can purchase half price drinks, including bottles of wine to drink throughout the evening. I'm sure you can work that one out for yourselves ;-) So, downstairs we have a 'booth' (our own HUGE personal space!) and a buffet style arrangement. The menu is listed below. Roast Christmas dinner on a stick with sticky cranberry glaze Smoked salmon, wild roquette and crème fraîche roulade Crispy tempura prawns with sweet chilli dip Mini Cumberland sausage toad in the hole with caramalised red onion jam Herb & spice crumb chicken fillets with smoky barbeque sauce Prime pork and herb sausages wrapped in flaky pastry with mild mustard mayo Spicy tomato rarebit (v) Coronation chicken and coriander open sandwich Spicy aromatic vegetable spring rolls with sweet chilli dip (v) Bocconcini and sweet cherry tomato skewers (v) Prawn crackers Crisp vegetable crudites with houmous (v) Cajun dusted potato wedges with sour cream and chive dip (v) Sweet treats Mini chocolate éclairs (v) Selection of mini muffins (v) I've eaten here before and the food is fantastic and there will be plenty for everyone! There are seats to sit down on, but having the buffet arrangement means that there is the opportunity for people to move around and socialise more freely than a formal sit down meal. Later in the evening we have a 70'3 & 80's disco night and we keep our area all night so we have a base to work from! The venue is fantastic, a two minute shuffle from Holborn station and easily walkable from the Phoenix. And all of this for the bargain price of £21.99 I do need numbers ASAP, so please book now and pay the money direct into the trip account. The account details will pop up when you book. To keep things simple I would suggest you pay for your own drinks as you go. Always one for a bargain, I would plan to buy a bottle or two for you and your buddy during happy hour as you get 50% off. SWAY are perfectly happy for you to take your bottles to the table and consume them at a later time! What more could you ask? The Christmas party is always huge fun. It's a great opportunity to hook up with buddies, and regale old dive tales. If you're new to the group and don't know anyone, get yourselves down here and meet the gang. We're a very friendly group, very welcoming and you won't be left stood on your own with no one to talk to. Please, book now and pay at the time of booking as I need to know numbers ASAP. DON'T PUT IT OFF! The seats will go! | This is a chance to go deeper than you have before! Experience narcosis and the effects that pressure has on the body, but in a safe, dry environment. We have the choice of a 40 or 50m dive, but the 50m dive is limited to 6 people, he 40m dive for 10 people. However, we can run two dives in one night if we get enough numbers. 40m = £30 50m = £40. Learn how a decompression chamber works in principle and experience the effects of narcosis, changes in your voice and movement. It's a great way for those not used to going deep to experience what it feels like under pressure. And of course, there are some great pubs around there too! If 6 people book for 50m first we'll go with that. I can always arrange another date for the 40m dive.....or someone else could.... ;-) Once I see the numbers for each dive choice I will invoice accordingly. Please just pay your deposit for now. | Description | Diving Conditions |

| As well as training new divers, GLUG wants to support all it’s members and encourage training and skill development. One important area and a requirement for the PADI Rescue Course and beyond is First Aid. Emergency First Response (EFR) has HSE recognition and is designed with divers in mind. As well as the usual first aid training in Primary Care (CPR) and Secondary Care, which allows you to become a ‘named’ first aider in the workplace, we will work through some diver specific injuries as an addition to the basic course requirements. Working through realistic scenarios, you learn how to give effective Primary and Secondary first aid care, how to evaluate the scene of an accident and keep you and those around you safe, how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) available in most shopping centres and public sports facilities nowadays and to understand what happens during a heart attack. You will learn how to deal with spinal injury, severe shock and bleeding and how to give effective rescue breaths and CPR on lifelike manikins, as well as dealing with less serious first aid situations. The course is a mix of home study (watching a DVD and completing a Knowledge Review Quiz) followed by a one day practical session. The Primary and Secondary Care course would normally cost £149, but for GLUG members we are offering the course at just £99 and include AED training at no extra cost! You will be asked to watch a returnable DVD (which can be bought on request) and to work through a set of knowledge reviews before the practical session. The course materials include a full colour manual with a refresher guide AND a quick reference first aid chart. You will also receive a FREE pocket resuscitation kit to keep with you at all times. We will look at building your own First Aid kit and in addition to the basic requirements, how to modify standard kits to facilitate diving accidents, such as Jelly Fish stings, Coral stings, sea snake bites, consideration for divers with a suspected bend and more. The course will be run in small groups to allow more time to practice practical skills. If you are thinking of doing your Rescue or DM course and you already have the EFR qualification and complete your Rescue Course or Divemaster course within two years of certification, you will get a significant reduction on your Rescue or DM course fee, whether you train with GLUG or any other PADI training centre. All EFR certifications come with an ID card and last for two years and are recognised as HSE First Aid qualifications. Book now to avoid disappointment! | N/A | |

Learn how to safely store, set up and use an O2 kit and which types of mask to use for different situations. Learn how to set the correct flow rate and monitor a patient on O2. I will also show you how to resuscitate a non-breathing patient using 100% O2 with a manually triggered demand valve mask, the most affective way of delivering oxygen to a non-breathing patient. I will teach you when oxygen should be administered, the safety aspects to consider when administering O2 to a diver and the hazards associated with oxygen administration in different environments. I will also teach you how to use an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) and the correct way to resuscitate a non-breathing diver. | Nitrox is the way forward for anyone serious about their diving. By increasing the amount of oxygen in the air mix, we can reduce the amount of Nitrogen we absorb and thus increase our dive time by a significant factor. Learn how to increase your bottom time and reduce your surface intervals (and feel less tired after a dive!) by using Nitrox on your dives. I will teach you how to calculate the correct mix for the depth you wish to dive and understand the safety aspects of diving with Nitrox and how the % of oxygen you choose can also limit the depth of your dive, whilst increasing the time you can stay down. Learn how to analyse your gas correctly, how to label your tanks and understand why Nitrox divers are so obsessive about their tanks! ;-) | N/A | |
