To avoid misunderstandings…

Posted by Mark on November 20th, 2009

I feel I should throw out a timely reminder about the comments system on the forum because I fear that there may be some confusion over how it works. We also altered this only last month meaning that not everyone will have read and understood the minutes… frankly I doubt anyone understood the live version so what hope from the minutes?!

Ok, here’s my attempt at a plain English description of how comments work.

If you put up a post on the site, you will receive an email whenever anyone leaves a comment on that post, even yourself! Those messages are now (as of last month) more friendly and don’t refer to having to ‘approve’ comments etc.

If you leave a comment on a post, you will receive an email should anyone reply to your comment.

Now, comments can be left as a ‘comment to the post’ or as a ‘reply to a comment on a post’. The latter is achieved by using one of the ‘reply to Bob’ links.

Each reply to a comment is indented and thus a cascading conversation can be built with all participants receiving a notification of each new reply.

What should be avoided is leaving a comment which (as it reads) is a reply as an existing comment as a normal comment on the post because only the post’s author will be informed and that’s unlikely to be what was intended.

Equally, the only way to contact all those who received the post (e.g. to announce something) is to post again – an issue to weigh up there… leave a comment and hope people visit the post and read it or is it too important to chance in which case a new post it’ll have to be!

Not perfect I know and I have plans… in time! But I felt it worth explaining so everyone understands who is and who isn’t going to be told about the existence of your comments when you leave them.

Cheers

Mark

SPEAKING FOR HEROES – Monty Halls

Royal Institute of Great Britain 16th July

Hi chaps,

Just a quick note to mention an event in London on 16th July that might tickle your fancy.

This event is a bit of a one off. The Royal Institution of Great Britain is hosting a single night where several of the best speakers in the UK are coming together to raise funds for Help For Heroes – the charity created to treat and rehabilitate the wounded Servicemen and women from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. All those involved in the evening are giving their services free of charge or at cost, so pretty much the entire ticket price goes directly towards facilities to treat the injured.

The subject of the talks is heroism, and a general theme of overcoming impossible odds. Speaking are John Simpson (BBC World Affairs Editor), Andy MacNab (bestselling author one of the Britain most decorated SAS soldiers), Dee Caffari (record breaking yachtswoman), Ben Saunders (record breaking Polar explorer), and myself (ocean nomad and second rate crofter from “Monty Halls Great Escape”). There are also numerous guest presenters – paralympians, record breaking endurance athletes, and noted figures from the media.

In addition to the lectures, there will be a gallery display from three of the world’s leading wildlife and wilderness artists, as well as the unveiling of three specially commissioned pictures commemorating the endeavors of the Armed Forces in Afghanistan. All art work will be available for purchase, with 50% of all profits going direct to Help For Heroes.

There is a pre-event reception in the drawing room of the Royal Institution, and a post lecture drinks party. These will be attended by the speakers, several wounded veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan, and of course anyone who comes along for the evening itself! Dress is as casual as you like, as the event is intended to be a feel good night out to raise money for the charity. It kicks off at 6pm and runs until 10pm. All in all a great celebration for the most worthy of causes.

Tickets are £100, the vast majority of which goes straight to the charity. This includes a bit of food, some free drinks, and of course a seat in the Faraday Lecture Theatre for the night itself. Perhaps the best way to look at it is as making a donation to Help For Heroes, and having a hum dinger of an evening out into the bargain.

How Can You Help:

We need bums on seats – I’ll be completely frank in that right now not enough people know about this event! If you can’t make it yourself (and we’d love to see you there), could you pass this email onto any friends or associates that you feel might want an inspirational, uplifting night out, and donate to Help For Heroes at the same time. Every person you tell will doubtless tell a few more, and we can raise a considerable sum for the charity. Every email you send on, every ticket you buy, every person you persuade to buy a ticket – it’s a massive help to the event.

It’s being filmed by RDF television, although you can’t beat actually being there!

Just go to www.speakingupforheroes.org.uk if you’d like to find out bit more about the event.

Really hope to see you at the Royal Institution on 16th July for what will be a tremendous night.

Kind regards,

The London Diving Chamber Team & Monty Halls
