GLUG XMAS DINNER

Posted by in2theblue on November 30th, 2009

To everyone attending the Xmas dinner, at Carluccios, on 12th, we have 10 people yet to choose their menu preference ie. £20 or £30. You do not have to chose the actual meals of the menus, just one or the other. The menus can be viewed by following this link:
Christmas Menus
If you do not choose a menu you will be eating from the £20 menu. Wine can be chosen on the evening.
We also need at least half of you to pay your deposits as requested in this post:
http://www.glug.co.uk/archives/3626
In the interests of a smoothly run evening could you now choose your menu and pay your deposit.
Thanks
Charlie

To avoid misunderstandings…

Posted by Mark on November 20th, 2009

I feel I should throw out a timely reminder about the comments system on the forum because I fear that there may be some confusion over how it works. We also altered this only last month meaning that not everyone will have read and understood the minutes… frankly I doubt anyone understood the live version so what hope from the minutes?!

Ok, here’s my attempt at a plain English description of how comments work.

If you put up a post on the site, you will receive an email whenever anyone leaves a comment on that post, even yourself! Those messages are now (as of last month) more friendly and don’t refer to having to ‘approve’ comments etc.

If you leave a comment on a post, you will receive an email should anyone reply to your comment.

Now, comments can be left as a ‘comment to the post’ or as a ‘reply to a comment on a post’. The latter is achieved by using one of the ‘reply to Bob’ links.

Each reply to a comment is indented and thus a cascading conversation can be built with all participants receiving a notification of each new reply.

What should be avoided is leaving a comment which (as it reads) is a reply as an existing comment as a normal comment on the post because only the post’s author will be informed and that’s unlikely to be what was intended.

Equally, the only way to contact all those who received the post (e.g. to announce something) is to post again – an issue to weigh up there… leave a comment and hope people visit the post and read it or is it too important to chance in which case a new post it’ll have to be!

Not perfect I know and I have plans… in time! But I felt it worth explaining so everyone understands who is and who isn’t going to be told about the existence of your comments when you leave them.

Cheers

Mark

Hi everyone.
I am really pleased that this trip is now half full which is quite exceptional, at this early stage!
As a note of caution to those of you considering this exciting trip, when the dust has settled on Xmas & The New Year, ‘Blue Seas’ will fill up quickly. Please do not miss out!

New Trips System

Posted by Mark on November 19th, 2009

The new trips system is now ‘live’: www.glug.co.uk/trips-page (you do need to make sure that you are logged in otherwise you will only get the list!)

Hint: Click the green ‘play’ button to interact with a trip and the ‘eject’ symbol to expand and collapse the trip details within the list.

Unfortunately this isn’t be best timing possible because this new feature is not finished and certainly not bug free however… it has to go live sometime and one sure way to find the bugs is to let people loose with it!

Before we go too far, this is a limited trial/test so if you are a trip organiser, for now please do not try to load your trips onto this new system – I’ll tell you when you can do so. The old Events system will remain live for now though I hope to not drag out the switch over too long.

I’m trialling the 2010 UK dive trips which Corinne organises on the new system first. These are now live and bookings are open. The traditional forms are avilable freely as .doc and pdf files from within the system. For the moment payment is via cheque (post or at the AGM etc) but that hopefully will be addressed shortly.

I would ask that people do register an interest or book using the new system and complete the online form. I am aware that the online booking forms are not operating perfectly and although your entries will be stored in the database, the trip organiser won’t at present have access to them – to be addressed soon.

Much of the styling is also yet to be finalised so if the colour scheme leaves you reaching for your sun glasses don’t panic!

If (or rather when) it all goes horribly wrong please do drop me an email with details of what happened (if there’s an error message copy and paste it!), what you were trying to do and which browser you were using – that way I’ll have a chance of fixing the problem.

It should ‘work’ with most browsers however you never know and for now this will remain off the iPhone themed plugin so normal safari browsing only please!

You may see a test trip (farily obviously not real) please ignore this as it’s there for my testing purposes and will appear/disappear randomly.

Now, ideally I’d be doing this at a time when I could dedicate plenty of time to fixing bugs, finishing off features and bolting on new stuff… however that’s not to be. So, while I will do me best to address any issues raised ASAP, the response times may be significantly worse than perhaps some have been use to of late.

Hopefully though you’ll all like this new feature as it is and in time I hope it will look and feel a lot more polished than it currently is… but everything has to start somewhere!

Cheers

Dear GLUGgers – I am in the process of putting together the Agenda for the AGM.

Have any of you got any points that you would like raised?  If so, please leave a comment, and I’ll try to add it to the Agenda rather than you having to wait until AOB!

Xmas Meal

Posted by Doug_Young on November 9th, 2009

December 12, 2009
7:30 pmto11:30 pm

Hi GLUGgers,

The venue I have been able to book us into, if we want it is Carluccio’s in Covent Garden – very convenient considering the location of the AGM.

Depending on the number of GLUGgers going we may have a private room!  The room, however, requires a mimimum spend of, glup £1000!  Mind you – if 30 of us attend, as in previous years, that would only mean sheeling out about £35 each including drink!  Anyway, please find below the list of people that have already said they would like to come – if you would like to attend and have not yet let me know, or if your name does not appear – please do let me know asap!

Cheers

Doug

AGM and Christmas Meal

Posted by Doug_Young on November 4th, 2009

December 12, 2009
3:00 pmto11:00 pm

Hi Fellow GLUGgers,

The AGM this year will be at 3.00pm at the Phoenix Artists Bar (where we hold our monthly meetings) on Saturday December 12th.  This will be followed by our Christmas Dinner.  Can you please respond to this post letting us know whether you will be attending the AGM, the AGM and Dinner, or purely the dinner.

The venue for the Christmas Dinner has yet to be decided – which is where you come in!   In order for us to secure a reasonable menu and price, we need to know how many GLUGgers are intending to come along – could you please let us know if you would like to come to the dinner, and also let us know what type of food would suit you – Italian, Steak, Traditional Christmas, Thai, etc, so that we can find somewhere able to take us!

As time is running out – could you please respond by the evening of Friday 6th November.

As an aside, due to the fact that we are having the AGM, there will be NO Monthly GLUG Meeting in December, and also the January Meeting will be the second Tuesday of January (Tuesday 12th).

Cheers

Doug

UWP mag issue 51 is now available

Posted by AlanL on November 1st, 2009

For any underwater photographers who don’t already look at this online magazine I recommend it.  It’s published every two months and can be downloaded at www.uwpmag.com. (You have to register, but you don’t get any spam etc. – just an email to tell you when the next edition is available.)

I also have a short article in this edition – ‘Parting Shot’ (at the end of the mag) based on a photo I took on the GLUG trip to the Red Sea in September.

Photography Course – 28th November

Posted by Neil on October 4th, 2009

Underwater Photography Stage

Underwater Photography Stage

Well, Alan and I went along to see Ocean Optics’ Underwater Photo Stage yesterday, and I loved it! It’s clear that Steve and Mark have spent a lot of time and thought putting this together.

The set is made up of a number of artificial “coral outcrops”, with all sorts of sponges, fans, and hard and soft corals. In and around these have been placed various “critters” – crabs, hawkfish, starfish, cowries, clownfish, etc. In one corner, they’ve created a wreck using a small boat, and placed fish in and around it. There are a couple of jellyfish floating mid-water, a Hammerhead (with a very friendly smile!), and even a diver floating mid-water. There was plenty to keep Alan and me occupied for a couple of hours underwater.

It’s perfect for practising UW Photography – no Dive Guides to hurry you along, no queue of other divers waiting to take photos of the critter you’ve found, and since the pool’s only 6m deep, you can do a 2-hour dive on a single tank!

Ocean Optics are also running Underwater Photography Courses with a difference. To get the best out of most courses, you need to have already bought not just the Camera, but different lenses for it, and a strobe. Ocean Optics will lend you a compact Fuji camera, with Macro and Wide Angle underwater lenses, as well as a strobe. You’ll also have an underwater earpiece, and the instructor will have an underwater microphone in his mask, so that you can get detailed feedback and advice on your photos without spending hours scribbling on a slate.

SPEAKING FOR HEROES – Monty Halls

Royal Institute of Great Britain 16th July

Hi chaps,

Just a quick note to mention an event in London on 16th July that might tickle your fancy.

This event is a bit of a one off. The Royal Institution of Great Britain is hosting a single night where several of the best speakers in the UK are coming together to raise funds for Help For Heroes – the charity created to treat and rehabilitate the wounded Servicemen and women from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. All those involved in the evening are giving their services free of charge or at cost, so pretty much the entire ticket price goes directly towards facilities to treat the injured.

The subject of the talks is heroism, and a general theme of overcoming impossible odds. Speaking are John Simpson (BBC World Affairs Editor), Andy MacNab (bestselling author one of the Britain most decorated SAS soldiers), Dee Caffari (record breaking yachtswoman), Ben Saunders (record breaking Polar explorer), and myself (ocean nomad and second rate crofter from “Monty Halls Great Escape”). There are also numerous guest presenters – paralympians, record breaking endurance athletes, and noted figures from the media.

In addition to the lectures, there will be a gallery display from three of the world’s leading wildlife and wilderness artists, as well as the unveiling of three specially commissioned pictures commemorating the endeavors of the Armed Forces in Afghanistan. All art work will be available for purchase, with 50% of all profits going direct to Help For Heroes.

There is a pre-event reception in the drawing room of the Royal Institution, and a post lecture drinks party. These will be attended by the speakers, several wounded veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan, and of course anyone who comes along for the evening itself! Dress is as casual as you like, as the event is intended to be a feel good night out to raise money for the charity. It kicks off at 6pm and runs until 10pm. All in all a great celebration for the most worthy of causes.

Tickets are £100, the vast majority of which goes straight to the charity. This includes a bit of food, some free drinks, and of course a seat in the Faraday Lecture Theatre for the night itself. Perhaps the best way to look at it is as making a donation to Help For Heroes, and having a hum dinger of an evening out into the bargain.

How Can You Help:

We need bums on seats – I’ll be completely frank in that right now not enough people know about this event! If you can’t make it yourself (and we’d love to see you there), could you pass this email onto any friends or associates that you feel might want an inspirational, uplifting night out, and donate to Help For Heroes at the same time. Every person you tell will doubtless tell a few more, and we can raise a considerable sum for the charity. Every email you send on, every ticket you buy, every person you persuade to buy a ticket – it’s a massive help to the event.

It’s being filmed by RDF television, although you can’t beat actually being there!

Just go to www.speakingupforheroes.org.uk if you’d like to find out bit more about the event.

Really hope to see you at the Royal Institution on 16th July for what will be a tremendous night.

Kind regards,

The London Diving Chamber Team & Monty Halls
