Let’s keep the GLUG website to diving issues.

Posted by psproul on 29th July 2007

I would like to be able to visit the GLUG website without being told that I should consider the carbon footprint of my diving holidays.  I understand that environmental issues are very important to some & applaud them for their convictions; I wonder however if the GLUG website is an appropriate place to promote these.  We’ve given a menu tab to carbon offsetting, but we haven’t got any such links to “Save the Whale” or other marine issues.

Issues such as global warming should be left to the individual consciences of the members & glug should remain neutral on them.

I appreciate that I’m probably in a minority in my beliefs, however glug members should understand more than most that; just because 90% of the population holds a particular viewpoint, doesn’t make the other 10% wrong!!!

Weymouth, 8-9 September

Posted by Corinne on 29th July 2007

I’ve got a few spaces on a dive I’m organising for my local BSAC club. They’re GLUG friendly - in fact we often combine Dorothy Divers and West Wickham training. It’s a brilliant hard boat - Skin Deeper - skippered by Len Hurdiss who used to take GLUG out on Autumn Dream. Accommodation is at a nearby comfortable B&B. Let me know if you’re interested.

Hi Everyone

Can anyone recommend a good Mares service technician in the South East? My BCD needs some repair work.

Thanks in anticipation.

Red Sea Southern villages - any feedback?

Posted by Ads on 25th July 2007

Hi!

The post re training at Marsa Shagra got me thinking about my next diving holidays. I may end up going to one of the 3 diving villages: Marsa Shagra, Marsa Nakari or Wadi Lahami in mid to late November. It seems you get quite a few dives per day, without the seasickness factor!

-Have you been in one of the three villages and what did you think?
-would you recommend one over the other?
-Would you want to come too? Price range = approx £650-£770 all included.

I’ll be grateful for any comments posted here.

Tolpuddle - latest news

Posted by Corinne on 21st July 2007

It looks as if we will be able to use Tolpuddle Hall just one last time in August as the Equity company cannot take possession until probate is granted and that will take some time.

GLUG Prize Quiz

Posted by Neil on 16th July 2007

Announcing the GLUG Marine Life ID Quiz!!

So, you think you know your Marine Creatures? Test your knowledge with the GLUG Photo Quiz, with the chance of winning some fabulous prizes!

There are 25 photos. For each photo, you must identify the creature (either by common, or latin name - no bonus for givnig both though). Most of the photos have one or more additional questions, for bonus points. You can download the GLUG Quiz Answer Form, and fill it in on your computer. Once it’s complete, click the “Email” button on the form to send it to me.

The Questions have varying degrees of difficulty - there will be some that just about everyone can answer, and others which I don’t expect more than a couple of people will know. In the event of a tie, there will be a tie-break question. The Quizmaster’s decision is final!!

To get maximum points, make your answers as complete as possible - for example if the creature was a “Klein’s Butterflyfish”, then putting “Butterflyfish” would only get you half the available points.

Click on the Photo of the first creature (shown here) to start.

Prizes (donated by me - having a clear-out!):

Winner will get first choice. There will also be a booby prize! Note: You don’t have to be a GLUG member to have a go at the quiz, but you must be a paid-up member to win a prize!!

Closing date for entries is September 1st - so get thinking!

(If you have any problems with the Answer form, please leave a comment below - but bear in mind I’ll be away from 18th-26th July!)

Tolpuddle - sad news

Posted by Corinne on 14th July 2007

Paul Wright of Tolpuddle Hall sadly died suddenly last week. His funeral is on Monday 16th and 2.00pm at Tolpuddle Church, just in case anyone can go along. I have sent a condolence card to his son. I won’t know until Monday evening whether we are still able to use Tolpuddle Hall for the 11-12 August weekend, but it’s unlikely and I will be contacting all divers when I know.

Lost reel

Posted by Corinne on 2nd July 2007

One of the GLUG reels (a large yellow McMahon) has gone missing. It has the initials GLUG written on it in black felt-tip. If anyone finds it, please let me know - they’re expensive to replace.

Many thanks
