Underwater Photography Dive trip

Posted by Neil on 28th July 2006

Hi everyone,

This is just an idea at present, but I know that there are quite a few keen Underwater Photographers in the club, and, inspired by last night’s Ocean Optics-organised UW photo lecture, and the latest issue of Underwater Photographer Magazine I wondered whether people would be interested in a UW Photography Course Liveaboard trip next year - probably to the Red Sea, since anywhere else would probably make the cost prohibitive for many people.

An underwater trip, naturally, concentrates on the photography. This means that you won’t necessarily be diving a different site every dive - sometimes you might dive the same site 2 or 3 times, so that you can learn from what you did on the first dive, and try to improve. The dives are likely to be mostly fairly shallow, because that’s where the best light is, and it provides the most time for taking photos.
Since the majority of people have compact digital cameras, I would choose a course/photographer which would focus on that type of camera, rather than the more expensive DSLR.

At this stage, I have no idea of time of year, cost, etc. - other than to say that it will probably cost around 40% more than a standard trip, depending on the professional photographer (or in other words somewhere around the £1000 mark).

For examples of the sort of trips I’m thinking of, have a look at a couple of similar trips with Alex Mustard, Martin Edge, and Maria Munn

If you might be interested in such a trip, please leave a comment below.

Walk for Life

Posted by Neil on 19th July 2006

Crusaid LogoHi everyone,

Ignacio and I will be doing the Crusaid Walk for Life again this year on July 30th. For those who don’t know, it’s a 10Km sponsored walk through London, to raise money for people affected by AIDS and HIV.

And, yes, we’re looking for sponsors! If you’d like to show your support, please sponsor us on our fundraising page. (It’s in Ignacio’s name, but we’re both doing the walk).

We should be flying between 24-28th November. I’ll compile a list of cheap flights. Please hurry up before all the bargain flights are gone.

Flat share search

Posted by Sonja Weirauch on 17th July 2006

Hi everybody, this is a little unusual… but I am currently looking for a new flat share with nice people and I thought what could be nicer than to live with gay divers such as me. So my question now: Is there anybody among us who has got a room available in London?

Special Offers from Mavericks Diving

Posted by Neil on 15th July 2006

Mavericks Diving, based on the Strand, London, have a very attractive offer on lightweight Sea Quest BCDs, and also a 25% discount if you trade in your old regulator for an Aqualung Titan or Legend regulator.

(I traded in my old Apexs regs with them just before I went to Honduras, before they were widely advertising this offer. I can vouch for the Legend reg being very pleasant to use!).

Diving in Tenerife

Posted by Anna on 9th July 2006

Last year a Glug bunch had a great time diving with Aqua-Tenerife Diving Centre. Last month I was diving with them and loved it. I wonder if anyone would like to dive there towards the end of November? Water will be still warm (22-24C) but air not too hot (20-23C).

Have a look at their web site www.tenerifedive.com, there are descriptions of diving sites. If you look at their newsletters of June 2005 and June 2006, you may see some familiar faces.

Please let me know as soon as posible that I can start the ball rolling.

Cheers

Anna

After this week, I will open this dive weekend to my dive club to fill all the places.
