Posted by Neil on 28th March 2006

Hi everyone,

This is a final reminder that if you haven’t yet renewed your GLUG membership (or had it extended by us), you’ll lose your access to the members areas of the website at the end of this week.

To prevent this from happening, please print off a Membership Form, fill it in, and send it with a cheque for £10 to Fiona (address is on the form).

Neil.

PS. If you’ve decided not to renew, and it’s because you’re unhappy with the club, please drop us a line (e.g. using the Contact Form) explaining what you feel we’re doing wrong - we do appreciate constructive criticism.

Membership reminder and Website tips

Posted by Neil on 8th March 2006

Hi everyone,

Fiona and I would like to remind everyone who hasn’t yet paid their renewal subscription, that you will lose your access to the members area of the website if we haven’t received your membership form and payment (£10) by the end of this month, you will lose your access to the members area of the website.
Please make sure that you fill in the membership form in full, even for renewals - many people change emails, home addresses, phone numbers, etc. in the course of a year, and this ensures that we have up-to-date contact details.

I thought it would also be a good opportunity to remind people of a few website tips - click on the link below to read more.

Eco-diving in Spain

Posted by Neil on 5th March 2006

I received this email today from Gaynor of Kenna Ecodiving, near Barcelona in Spain:

My partner and I had been diving here for a number of years before coming to live on the Costa Brava; and had noted a big difference between the protected and unprotected areas.

So we began a research project to look at diversity within the sea grass in a local bay, initially to make our own diving more worthwhile. Soon diver friends from the UK and Ireland were joining us regularly and we started to feed our data to a Catalonian conservation organisation CRAM.

The project has grown from there and we now have volunteer divers coming from all over the world to help with our research, especially budding u/w photographers and divers with an interest in conservation.

In return for the help in gathering data we offer free ecodiving and some intial training on species identification and data collection techniques.

Volunteers (up to 6 per week) stay in a lovely apartment, with private pool, and are collected from Girona or Barcelona airports and brought down to the boat each day for diving.

Have a look at our website to get more info on the sea grass (Posidonia oceanica), see photos, etc.

Members of your group would be assured an excellent stay with great diving and with much fun to be had.

Best regards Gaynor

Their trips cost €223 (approx £160) for 1 week, including airport transfers, accommodation, and up to 10 dives (weather dependent).

If anyone would be interested in organising a trip, or just going on a trip, please leave a comment below.

Dive Logs & Scuba Tags

Posted by Neil on 3rd March 2006

Scuba Tags

I discovered an interesting Scuba-related site a couple of days ago, and thought I’d share it with everyone…

The site is called Dive-logs.com, and, as the name suggests, they specialise in Dive Log refills, but for me, far more interesting is another product, called Scuba Tags.

These are made from high-strength, UV-resistant acrylic, measuring 6.5cm x 4cm, and can be custom engraved with your details. They come with a stainless steel split ring for attaching to equipment.

The obvious use for these tags is to identify your equipment, however one of their customers has suggested an excellent safety use: Give a tag to the boat skipper when you get in the water, and say you’ll collect it when you get back on the boat. The skipper then knows that if he has your tag, you’re still in the water, and there’s therefore less chance of getting left behind (anyone seen the Open Water movie?)

I’ve signed GLUG up for their affiliate program, which means that if you click through to their website from here, GLUG will get 10% commission from your first order. This will help the club to keep its membership fees down.
