AGM & Xmas Meal Reminder

Posted by Neil on 19th November 2004

So far, I have 13 names on the list for the GLUG Xmas Meal.
It would be nice to have a few more - thirteen’s unlucky, after all!
If your name’s not on the list, then I haven’t received your deposit.

At present, no-one has told me of any special dietary requirements (e.g. vegetarian only, etc.), so I’m assuming that everyone’s happy with the Sample Menu
How to pay the deposit, and details of the time & place

Also, any members who are planning to come to the AGM, but not the meal, please let me know (log in, then click my name at the top of this post to send an email), so that we know roughly how much space we’ll need.

Finally, another plea for members to volunteer for committee posts. So far, (taking into account new names, and existing committee members who have confirmed they will stand again), I only have names for 3 of the posts.

With only 3 committee members, it’s doubtful whether the club could function, despite having over 130 members. Hopefully the 13 names for the meal are not an omen that this will be the club’s Last Supper!

Posts without nominations:
Chairperson
Overseas Dives Coordinator
Membership Secretary
Newsletter Editor
Equipment Officer

Posts with nominations:
Treasurer - Alan Larsen
Publicity Officer - Kirk Wylie
UK Dives Coordinator - Corinne Sarjeant

Neil.

– update 20/11/04 –
Two more people have paid deposits, so we’re over that unlucky 13 hurdle!

– update 26/11/04 –
I’ve decided to nominate myself for Newsletter Editor.

GLUG Christmas Menu

Posted by Neil on 12th November 2004

I’ve received the Sample Xmas Menu from the Lye Torng Restaurant. (You’ll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to read it).

The food for the GLUG Xmas Meal will be as listed, or something very similar. As you can see, it all looks delicious! There will also be a generous bar tab, which should cover wine with the meal, and drinks from the bar. Any money left over from the bar tab will be donated to The Food Chain.

Any vegetarians, please let me know when sending your deposit - the Lye Torng can provide some other vegetarian dishes for you.

Likewise, if anyone has special dietary requirements please let me know, and I’ll see what can be arranged.

I need deposits by December 1st - see this post for details of how to pay.

Invitation to Pride London Community Forum

Posted by Neil on 6th November 2004

Pride London is inviting gay and lesbian groups to their Community Forum on Thursday 11th November, at which plans for next year’s Pride Parade, Rally, and Festival Fortnight will be discussed. The GLA are hosting the forum.

The free Pride London now has full charity status, and is classified as an official London attraction which allows ‘legal’ motorised floats on the Parade through central London on Saturday 2nd July 2005.

The new Pride Board is chaired by Stephen Coote of www.gaytoz.com, and Jason Pollack has been appointed Chief Executive. The Board will be looking for people to join various subcomittees, especially to develop a more colourful parade and create events for the two-week long Pride Festival.

Pride have also won the licence for EuroPride 2006, which will double or even treble the number of gay visitors to London on 1st July 2006

The forum will be held in City Hall, Queens Walk, Tower Bridge, London, from 6.30pm-8.30pm on Thursday 11th November. If anyone would like to go along to represent GLUG, please email me (click on the “Contact” link on the left, or on my name at the top of the post).

I received this via the Gay and Lesbian Association for Doctors and Dentists. Some of you may be interested. I knew Cinders as one of my friends used to work at the Admiral Duncan, and I will try to be there.

GLUG Equipment Register

Posted by Neil on 1st November 2004

One of my long-outstanding actions has been to set up an Equipment Register which the club and its members will lend out to other members. Well, I’ve finally got round to it - see the menu on the left.

Any of us who started diving early on in life will probably remember that having to buy your own equipment can put quite a dent in your monthly salary, and even a more experienced diver trying UK diving for the first time can find that buying Tanks, weights, and drysuit can stretch the finances a little.

The idea of the Equipment Register, therefore, is to enable members to borrow equipment on an occasional basis, from the club, or from other members. Any members who have scuba equipment they’re prepared to lend out, please email me (click on my name at the top of this post), and I’ll add you to the register.

Please note that all arrangements concerning the loan of the equipment are arranged between the lender and the borrower - the club takes no responsibility for ensuring that the items on this list are fit for use (other than the club’s own items, naturally!), and cannot offer compensation to lenders for items which are lost or damaged by the borrower, or to borrowers for items which are unfit for use.

Police hunt murderers of gay man

Posted by Neil on 1st November 2004

Police are hunting a gang of teenagers who left 5 people injured, and one dead in a series of attacks near the Royal Festival Hall early on Saturday morning.

The gang are thought to have been targeting gay men on their way home from the clubs.

You can read more here, here, and here.

Our sympathies go to David Morley’s friends and family.
