Internet Telephony

Posted by Neil on 22nd October 2004

This is a little off-topic for GLUG, I know, but I thought you might be interested to know about a service called Skype, which I’ve been using.

It’s a free program which allows you to use your PC as a telephone. You can call anyone else who uses Skype, for free, but you can also use it as a normal phone, to call landlines or mobiles anywhere in the world, for a fraction of BT’s rates. For example, you can call any landline in Europe, North America, Australia, or New Zealand for just €0.02 per minute

You need a PC with speakers and a microphone to use it, but according to their website, you don’t need a broadband connection (although I suspect the quality may not be as good with dial-up).

If you decide to give it a try, don’t forget to add me to your contacts list!

Stoney Cove Photography Competition

Posted by Neil on 12th October 2004

Stony Cove, the inland dive site in Leicestershire, is holding a “Splash-In” photography competition on Saturday 20 November.
There will be prizes for the winners, free hot drinks, and free copies of DIVER magazine in the marquee (near the shower-block) for competitors, supporters and other divers enjoying a dip in Stoney Cove.
The £5 competition entry fee entitles you to a free 36-exposure slide film . The film must be exposed at Stoney Cove and handed over to be entered in the competition on the same day. Digital entries will also be allowed, with proof that all shots entered are from your on-the-day dive at Stoney Cove.
All divers are welcome to participate - you do not need to be an experienced underwater photographer to enjoy this event; a special category for novice photographers will give you the chance to borrow a demonstration model of the easy-to-use Bonica underwater camera.
Pre-register or simply turn up on the day.
