Dry Dive at London Diving Chamber - 3rd August

Posted by Neil on June 24th, 2005

The Diving Chamber

I’ve provisionally arranged a club “dive” at the London Diving Chamber for the evening of Wednesday August 3rd, at 6pm.

For those who have never experienced a Dry Dive, it can be a fun and educational experience - it also counts as a real dive in your log book.

If you think you’ve never experienced Nitrogen Narcosis, or even if you have, but think you can handle it - a Dry Dive will demonstrate just how narced you can become.
I’ll be taking along 2 or 3 simple puzzles for us to try before the dive, and then another set (of the same difficulty) to try during the dive - I can guarantee you’ll be surprised at just how much longer it takes you, and some of your answers at depth might surprise you too!

The way the dive works is this:

  • We each have to sign a standard medical declaration, and waiver form
  • We enter the chamber, with an LDC (London Diving Chamber) staff member, and then the chamber is slowly pressurised to a maximum “depth” of 50 metres (6 times Atmospheric pressure).
  • While at depth, we’ll do a few simple puzzles, which should hopefully demonstrate to everyone that even if they don’t feel narced, they are!
  • After staying at the agreed depth for the agreed time, the chamber is slowly depressurised, carrying out deco stops as necessary.
  • Everyone should wear light, non-static cotton clothing - as the air is pressurised, it becomes hotter. (For those physicists among us, this is due to Gay-Lussac’s Law - how appropriate!).

The cost of the dive is £25 per person, assuming we get 10 people. If there are less than 10 people, we can choose to either pay for the remaining spaces, or share the chamber with non-GLUG divers.

If this date is unsuitable for many people, August 2nd or 4th are also possibilities, so please let me know.

I will need payment of the full amount in advance. If you have to drop out, this will only be refunded if the space can be refilled (either by GLUG, or by someone else).

Please email me ASAP if you’re interested.

Neil.
