Diving in Gran Canaria

Posted by madrigal on August 24th, 2010

I’m going to GC in September and wondered whether anyone has dived there?  What’s a good recommended site?  Is there a gay friendly dive company?  I have been told that there is one in Tenerife with a link to a dive company in GC but don’t know anything about it.

I also have friends that want to come and snorkel while I dive – any suggestions for the good site to look out for?

Any info would be greatly received.

Regards, Ali

    Hi Ali,

I’ve dived in GC about 4 years back. I dived with Davy Jones Diving. They dive in various parts of the island, but mostly use El Cabron, the local marine reserve. I saw plenty of marine life including cuttlefish. The dive outfit was well organised and very friendly. Not advertised as Gay Friendly, but this is Gran Canaria so assume they have no choice but to be :-) My only quibble is that the shore entry is very difficult, clambering over rocks etc. I actually slipped and dislocated my finger! But don’t let this put you off. I’m a complete woose when is comes to shore entry !!!

    Hi Ali

Agree with Gary, El Cabron is pretty much were all the majority of tourist type dive centres end up and yes it can be a painful access across the rocks (and there can be a bit of wave action sometimes) – But it is worth it and is a very good site with a lot of swimming things :) – Torpedo rays, cuttles, trumpetfish and (I think they are called)banjo crabs. Most dive centres run minibusish type transport (it is quite remote) – so fairly easy pick-up. I also managed to get on some deeper wreck dives outside of Las Plamas (after proving ability) – but that dive centre that organised it(in Puerto Rico) are no longer operating. Do the usual – take time and talk to them. If you can’t or you detect any prejudice – then find another….Sorry can’t make recommendations as it’s been a few years.

    Hello Ali

I have dived in Gran Canaria a few times, there are some great dive sites which most of the dive companies all head for. I have dived with an english couple, Dave and Ellen, who run Dive Academy, both of them and their team are very gay friendly, even came to gay pride with me a couple of years back – and Dave is real cute too (so is Ellen if your into that too!), so that’s a bonus, lol. Look them up on their web site, but don’t tell them what I said (ok you can, they know me and my humour). Have fun.
