Posted by Manu on March 6th, 2010

Hi All,

Hope you all well and will be able to help.

I’m looking for a good international Diving insurance for the coming year.

Thank you

Manu

    hi Manu

I’ve been with the DAN insurance http://www.daneurope.org/web/guest/sport-member-summary

I’m told their coverage is quite good and (third hand) that they actually do stuff and pay out when you need it, so long as you contact them and have them coordinate. Happily, i don’t have first or second hand experience with ever calling that in.

Does anyone actually have first hand experience of calling in for help for someone on one of these kinds of plans ?

    Hi Manu

If you can hold out for a few weeks (27th/28thMarch), you should be able to discuss your requirements with both DAN and Westfield at

    http://www.diveshows.co.uk/index.shtml

You can tell them exactly what sort of insurance you are looking for and taylor the insurance around that. Perhaps you are a technical/deep diver, closed circuit diver or a recreational diver. Do you have expensive equipment which may need additional, specific cover? Do you want to cover non diving trips such as skiing? I went with Westfield for the latter reason!

I hope this has been of some help Manu and all the best.

I too have DAN insurance. I think it’s the only insurance that will treat you without asking what depth you were at or specifying qualifying limits. DAN also uses the data it collects from diving incidents to research into safety matters, which are all discussed in it’s quarterly magazine.

I’ve not needed to use the insurance yet :-) so I can’t comment on that side of it. But my feeling is that if you try to cover diving incidents through your normal holiday travel insurance they will set lots of limits and ask lots of questions and try not to pay.

Don’t bother with the DAN travel insurance add-on. Just get an ordinary travel insurance policy that’s appropriate. (I’ve got an annual travel policy to cover non-diving accidents, baggage loss etc.)
