Tropical Reef in Basildon!
Posted by Neil on September 29th, 2009
Ocean Optics are opening what is believed to be the World’s first set designed purely for teaching and practising Underwater Photography this weekend.
Their photography stage is based around workstations to improve specific skills, with the centrepiece being an artificial reef with table, staghorn, turbinaria, fan corals, tube sponges, and tropical fish and crustaceans. There’s even a small wreck for practising wide-angle shots! Best of all, the water temperature is a balmy 30 degrees!
Ocean Optics will be running courses for novice Compact camera users, and I wondered whether there’s enough interest in the club for them to run a course specifically for GLUG?
You don’t even need your own Camera – Ocean optics will supply you with a Fuji compact and housing, along with three underwater lenses and a strobe! If you’re thinking about starting UW Photography, or if you’ve already got an UW Camera but aren’t getting the shots you want, then this is the course for you!
If any club members are interested, please leave a comment below, or email me using the envelope that appears next to my name at the top of the post when you’re logged in.
Neil.

Hi Neil
I suggested much the same to Steve too. You don’t have to take the course either; if you just want to practise with the camera and get in the tank then you can do that too. I’ve been in it before – it’s 6 metres deep, which feels much more like diving than when you’re in a swimming pool.
I’d be interested in going sometime in December so that I can get ‘tuned in and tuned up’ for my trip to the Philippines over Xmas/New Year.
Alan
I think I’m actually going to go along this Sunday – so I’ll let you know what it’s like. But I’d also be interested in going again in December – I need to practise for my Philippines trip in Feb! Especially since I haven’t dived for sooooooo long!
Hi Neil and Alan, Also very interested in playing around at the centre. My pics still need a lot of work! Dec would be good to o for me as I will be itching by then to get in the water…
Hi Neil, I think that this is a brilliant idea. I definitely will be up for it. I’m supposed to work this Sunday but will try to change it and come. If not, December will be ideal. Just in time to practice before going to Philippines.
Thanks for organising this.
Anna
I may have misled you – I haven’t organised anything! This weekend is just a chance to jump in the tank and practise taking photos (no instruction) – and the price is £45 for two hours, including tanks, air, and weights. If you’re still interested in coming along, then please get in touch with Ocean optics to book your place!
However, if you’re interested in doing the Photography Course, let me know, and if there’s enough interest, I’ll try to set up a date.
Neil.
Neil, I would be interested in a photography course day, possibly in December. A GLUG day out?? Keep me in the loop please.
Thanks
C
Hi boyz & gals,
I’d love to do the photography course and finally find out if I really am a lazy workman, or my tool is just defunct. December is NOT a good month for me work wise, but if a weekend date is proposed or an evening, then I might be able to slip in round the back if I come a little later than the rest. If not the course, then another excuse to don some rubber and get wet is always welcome.
Keep me posted.

LOL! :)
It’ll almost certainly be a weekend, since I’ve used up all my holiday for the year, and it’s a bit of a trek for an evening.
I now have at least 2 people interested in a Photography Course – which is the minimum needed. I also have at least 2 others who would like to practice their skills in the tank.
ALan L and myself are going to their opening day on Saturday, so we’ll try to fix a date on one of the first three weekends in December, and get some more information about times etc. – and of course report back on the reef itself!
Great stuff Neil. Look forward to hearing all about it.
