Oblique reference to GLUG in Diver magazine
Posted by AlanL on August 27th, 2009
Did anyone else spot John Bantin’s reference in Diver magazine to his experience with GLUG on a liveaboard trip a couple of years ago? It’s in the September edition of Diver in the box about liveaboard etiquette on page 35.
He doesn’t refer to GLUG by name, but says how considerate and respectful everyone was on a gay charter he was once on. A bit stereotypical maybe, but we clearly made an impression on him! He came with us on a trip on Blue Seas in 2006. This is a link to the article he wrote about that trip at the time: http://www.divernet.com/Travel_Features/liveaboards/157464/going_overboard.html.
(When I see him I’ll let him know we want a full reference to GLUG next time!)

Hi Alan,
I’m fairly sure that the article does indeed mention ‘GLUG’ and explains what it stands for… at the end, on the online version at least! Perhaps someone edited it out ahead of it going to press…
Cheers
Mark
Reply to MarkYes Mark, he clearly mentions GLUG at the end of the original article that I linked to. That was in Diver magazine in October 2006. He doesn’t mention GLUG in the current article that I was referring to; he just says ‘a gay dive charter’. See the box on the left side of page 35 in the September 2009 edition of Diver magazine (as I said above). This article is not online yet.

Reply to AlanLI did see the article and was quite pleased of the mention, despite it no naming GLUG or being stereotypical! Doesn’t everyone know that us gay divers fold over our dry/wet suit after each dive, iron it once a week and even have a go at sewing back the odd tear together! I wash mine with the new “In the Pink” Lenor lol
Reply to froggydiverI think it’s really sweet that he mentioned us again. And I liked the original article too – okay, it was a bit ‘Carry On Diving’, but anyone who was on the trip knows that it wasn’t without moments of high camp.
Reply to JasonAlso, did you notice that the photo on the cover of the same September 2009 issue is from that GLUG trip too? There is only on GLUG member in shot (Swiss Jimmy), but Birga and Tobias are unmistakable. It was part of the same series of photos that both illustrated his article in the October 2006 issue and also graced it’s cover. Which means that GLUG has been a Diver cover star twice in three years. Eat you heart out, Gisele Bündchen.
