Diving In Cuba

Dear all
Thinking of a Cuban diving holiday this year. Has anyone been recently and can they offer any advice/suggestions on where is good?
Thanks in anticipation of assistance!

i went to maria la gorda, on the western coast, a couple of years ago. diving was good (i don’t remember it being great, but hey, the water was clear and warm and the sun was shining, so it can’t have been that bad…), and it’s meant to be the best diving on the island. it’s quite a longish drive down unmarked roads to the end of the island, so make sure you have plenty of daylight to get there. (we ended up being waylaid by cigar sellers, who’d faked a breakdown so that they could show us the plantation, with the consequence that we had to drive much of the route in total darkeness). there’s a diving hotel on site, basic rooms, and okay food (in cuba you can’t expect much more than that). there’s nowhere else to stay in any event.
would i go back? probably not. cuba is fun at first, but you’re constantly accosted by people on the make, the food is dire (restaurants that serve 2 dishes, despite presenting you with a full menu), buildings are crumbling, the roads are awful….but there’s great music, mojitos, sunshine and cigars (most of them counterfeit). it’s not the easiest and most relaxed place for a holiday.
god, i sound so cynical…go, and enjoy! you’ll have a memorable time.
Indeed I have been umming and ahrring about Cuba and doing the full culture/dive spread for some time now. I would be interested to know what two-three ideas/itinerary people might have. .
