GLUG Summer BBQ

Posted by webmaster on August 2nd, 2004

The summer barbecue yesterday was a great success. Once again Gerhard did us proud, with so much food that we couldn’t eat it all!
We had chicken skewers, salmon fillets, sardines, baked butternut squash, potatoes with crab, cumberland sausage, squid, homemade burgers, as well as plenty of salads, roast vegetables, and desserts to die for!

The weather was very kind to us, with one of the hottest days of the year so far, and the 30 or so people crammed into Gerhard’s garden certainly enjoyed themselves.

This is GLUG’s main fundraising event of the year, with all proceeds going to The Food Chain. This year, we were lucky enough to have Kerr and Martin from the Food Chain at the Barbecue to tell us about the charity, and how the money is spent, so here’s a quick summary, for those who may not know…

The Food Chain provide a nourishing Sunday lunch and evening snack to people who are housebound by HIV and AIDS (and to their partners and families). They currently deliver over 15,000 meals every year from their 6 kitchens around London.

Their chefs have a budget of under £4 per person, to provide a main course and dessert, as well as a nutritious snack for the evening.

They also supply emergency hampers for people with HIV who have just been released from hospital, which provide them with a week’s worth of groceries.

Special thanks must go to Gerhard, for organising and hosting the event; to Tim, who provided him with much-needed assistance in cooking and preparing all the food; and last, but by no means least, to Gerhard’s contacts in the catering trade who provided all of the Food and Drink for free, meaning that all of the £25 per head charge will go to the Food Chain. Several people made additional donations, and so the final amount raised was £1000! Well done everyone!
