Expedia currently have flights from Heathrow to Phuket via Kuala Lumpur for &gbp;700, and if you’re prepared to go a day early and spend an extra night in Phuket, Travelocity have flights even cheaper than that.
DFL (Diving for Life) is a great event, which raises lots of money for HIV & AIDS charities nominated by the participating clubs each year. It’s also great fun. It’s not the cheapest week’s diving you’ll go on, but it’s for a good cause, and you could always go for an extra week before or after, to bring the price per week down!
If you’ve never been, then please consider it - GLUG’s nominated charity, the Food Chain, gets a cut of the proceeds, in proportion to the number of GLUG members that attend.

Reply to NeilJust returned from Thailand diving the Similan Islands and went with Thai air - highly recommend for the direct flight although more expensive and they are both good night flights there and back so time to rest/sleep onboard.
