Diving for Life 2008

Posted by Stephanie Butcher on October 7th, 2007

Diving for Life 2008 has just been announced - it will be on Phi-Phi Island, Thailand from 18-25th October 2008. We hope for a huge GLUG uptake on this one!! Keep your eyes on the DFL (Diving for Life) website : www.divingforlife.org
where in the next few days/weeks bookings will open.
I have emailed Adam at Rainbow Scuba (also Thailand) to see if he can arrange a liveaboard for the week preceding - if you’d be interested in this please email me direct so i can keep a head count. (stephaniebutcher@aol.com),

    Hi Stephanie
Am very interested particularly if you can make it a two week jamboree with a live a board and dive for life.
Please keep me informed, thanks Roy

    Hi Steph

Sounds interesting and would be very interested especially if we can combine it with a Rainbow Scuba trip.

Look forward to seeing some more details

    Thanks

    Hi Steph,
I believe October is at the tail end of the monsoon season. Any info you get from Rainbow Scuba on likely viz and weather conditions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi everyone

I’m keeping an eye on the weather in that part of the world as I am off there in January for a few months. October is ‘not’ a good time to go. It’s right in the middle of the rainy season, and there are current reports of severe flooding now in Koh Samui.

I was in Phi Phi Island mid November 2006, and the Viz was ok, but we still got an hour or more rain each day.

It is a consideration, certainly. Visibility is unlikely to be great (although compared to much of the UK, still pretty good!).

While it’s great to see DFL (Diving for Life) moving away from their traditional Carribbean locations, it’s a shame that they didn’t research the diving conditions. I’ve also heard that this year’s trip to Belize was not up to the usually high standard, in terms of the accommodation, so I’m concerned that they’re going to have problems attracting the same numbers that they usually do.

On the other hand, if you’re going to combine it with a week with Rainbow Scuba, according to this page, the visibility in the Western Gulf (where Ko Samui is) is excellent in October.

For me, it’s going to depend on the price. DFL is a very worthwhile cause, and great fun, but there’s a limit to how much I’ll pay for mediocre diving.

I was curious about this trip since it’s a beautiful part of the world when the weather’s good. So I’ve been checking satellite weather images for the region for the last couple of weeks and it’s been very wet for much of the time. Not just showers but days of more or less continuous rain. As Fred says, October is not a good time to go.

I’ve found a website that’s updated regularly by a resident of Phuket which is very close to Phi Phi. There are accounts of the recent gloomy weather, heavy rain and grey skies with pictures as well. Paradise it ain’t at the moment. The website is:

I was on the GLUG trip to Phuket and the Similans liveaboard in early May a couple of years ago. The weather was beautiful and the viz excellent for the first week. However, the monsoon arrived on the day we got back to land and the place was transformed. The flat seas suddenly had a high surf and swimming in the sea was out of the question. Some of us did some day trips to local dive sites (including Phi Phi) and the viz was atrocious - down to under two metres at times.

It’s a real shame that this trip isn’t being organized for the high season which is December to April.
The diving may be OK in October but there’s likely to be lots of rain and grey skies. It seems a long way to go for that when it can be so much better.

Had a great time at DFL2007 and would like to go to 2008. May also be interested in extending the trip with a liveaboard.

Horrible weather just now and in October.

This is the man who is doing my PADI cross-over.

See you all at the xmas party
