Some more pics

Posted by expiredmember on April 11th, 2007

I’ve just uploaded to the gallery some of my pics from a week’s ‘muck diving’ in the Lembeh Straits in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, which I did at the end of March.

For anyone who hasn’t heard about ‘muck diving’, it’s quite unlike anything you’ve ever done underwater in warm seas. It’s essentially diving over a black sandy (and often rubbish-strewn) bottom, but in which you can find the most amazing array of weird and wonderful critters. For photographers it’s a high-yield destination - there is so much to see that you almost run out of media on a two-tank boat trip!

If anyone wants to see more, I’ve got loads more pics… Enjoy!

Absolutely amazing creatures and great pictures Alan. May be you should run a course for GLUG members interested in underwater photography. I’ll be the first to sign in.

I agree, Alan - fantastic pictures. I’m green with envy and, yes, I’d love to see more. Will you be bringing a bulging portfolio to the next meeting?

Superb pics, I love the shrimps in particular, excellent!

I’ld like to know more about where you went and dived, as the marine life seems very very special.

Thanks guys and gals. I have printed lots more and will bring them along to the next meeting (which I should be able to get to).

Gerhard, Lembeh Straits is close to Manado in North Sulawesi, which is a more traditional warm water reef destination. It is quite a small area between Lembeh Island and the mainland. We stayed at the Lembeh Resort on Lembeh Island and like in Utila, left it only to go diving and back to the airport at the end of the week; check it out at http://www.lembehresort.com.

There is a marine park around Bunaken Island, which can be dived from the mainland around Manado or one of several other islands - and the diving there is apparently fantastic too. Typically a lot of divers go North Sulawesi for a couple of weeks, spending a bit over a week in the marine park and a few days in Lembeh Straits to do some muck diving at the end.

I am planning a trip to Manado/Bunaken for July/August 2008 (a couple of people are interested). The plan was to go to Bunaken for two weeks, but I will now definitely want to spend a few days back in Lembeh too!
