Trip Organiser: Mark
Max number: 10 Spaces: 8/10 remaining Participants: Mark, Alan, Debi, Kristy, Pete + 3 (so far) This firm fixture of the GLUG dive calendar is one not to be missed. In recent years we have been blessed with truly stunning weather and also visibility which has left seasoned divers tapping their computers to check that deco warnings are real and pinching themselves that this is the UK! This is a wreck divers paradise however there’s plenty for those who like reefs and little things too as good weather allows us to venture to reefs only accessible on those occasions. We dive from Venture a hard boat with a hydraulic lift, toilet, skipper (always a bonus!) and a fair amount of space for 10 divers. That’s 10 divers sans respective kitchen sinks! Diving Whilst this trip is suitable for a range of diving experience, Plymouth in fair weather offers some deeper dives including wrecks and sometimes we’re lucky to be able to reach the Eddystone Lighthouse. Dives are in the range 20-35m and diving on Nitrox is a wise choice to maximise dive time on the deeper dives as well as leaving you less tired for the journey home This is definitely a trip to aim for if your skills, experience or logged dive numbers are in short supply, thereafter it’s sure to be a firm favourite. If in doubt as to whether you can go on this trip, please ask. Usual applies, dive safely, no return to port so take enough cylinders and/or gas for 2 dives per day, smile, enjoy the marine life and the metal, drink lots of tea/coffee/hot chocolate and wear a hat and/or protect yourself from the sun machine in the sky! Bring lunch, some on-board snacks (hot) are provided however a ravenous diver may well need more! This is a mix’n’match trip so expect different buddies each day to keep things fresh. Diving on Nitrox is very possible and well advised on this trip. Those diving on Nitrox will where possible be buddied together to maximise the benefits. Accommodation Accommodation as a group is sadly no longer a feasible option for this trip so it’s up to you where you stay (suggestion list available on request). Broadly speaking it’s best to try and locate yourself on the track from the village of Brixton through to Mountbatten although staying more central and driving out and around is perfectly doable too. Anyone hardy enough to camp will find the once overcrowded, busy and sometimes noisy campsite at Venn Farm, a much quieter and pleasant experience with adequate amenities and the opportunity for some savings to be made on accommodation costs… plus its more social. Go on, rough it for a night or two, you know you want to!!! Departure/Procedure The boat leaves from Mount Batten Marina (water taxi pontoon), parking is in the nearby free car park with toilet facilities and dive fills are located at the nearby Mountbatten centre. For this trip to run smoothly there are a series of group and individual effort initiatives which were tested in 2017 and which will be refined in 2018. These are best summarized as many hand equals light work and less faff, more fun! Après Dive And I got a C in GCSE French… no idea why! After two years at our newly found meal venues and following feedback, this year we will be eating at the same venue (Rose and Crown) two nights in a row. Enough of the eye rolling, the menu is sufficiently diverse that you are not going to get bored and when divers suggest the idea I think it's safe to assume that the venue has hit the mark well and truly! Contrary to any suspicions, the dropping of the other venue has nothing to do with the breakfast pie which may or many not have been the leftovers from the fried breakfast in pastry!!! It was odd but actually very nice as it happens The evening meals are the gel of this trip when we can relax, unwind and enjoy the company of friends and new acquaintances alike.
