Website changes

Posted by Neil on April 25th, 2008

If you log into the members area of the website, you’ll see a few changes, following an upgrade to the latest version of the Wordpress software.

Most changes are to the style of the pages, but one important change is that it’s now easier to add photos, video, documents, and even sound to your posts. On the Write Post page, you’ll see “Add media:” with icons for each type of media (Documents come under “other”). You can either upload the file from your computer, or if it’s something on another website (e.g. a YouTube video), just enter the URL (link) to the file.

As always, if you have any problems, contact me!

Neil.

24-26 May Weymouth dive

Posted by Corinne on April 24th, 2008

This is a non-GLUG dive - a mixture of people I know.  I’ve got two places left.  It’s a 3-day event over the bank holiday, diving off X-Dream and staying at a comfortable B&B in Weymouth.  Diving is £37.50 per day and accommodation a bargain £18 per night inc breakfast.  Any UK drysuit diver welcome - please contact me for a booking form.

Diving for Life 2008 - places still available

Posted by Neil on April 23rd, 2008

All,

I received this today from the DFL (Diving for Life) organisers:

We are excited about Diving for Life at Phi Phi Island in Thailand October 18-25, 2008. The trip is selling well, and we have booked enough participants to have exclusive use of our section of the resort. (Thai hospitality dictates that a small section of the resort be available for other guests.) However, we still have capacity to add more particiapnts. Please go to our website, http://www.divingforlife.org/ for more information about this year’s trip and to obtain registration forms. We also have some wonderful add-on trips on the website, if you are inclined to stay in Southeast Asia a little longer.

Please pass along information about Diving for Life to other diving friends. We are pleased to have registrants who have never been to Diving for Life this year from all over the world, and it is always nice to expand our community. We hope to see you in Thailand.

LAST CALL FOR RED SEA SEPTEMBER

Hi Everyone

To date, we only have 7 GLUG members on this trip, with 13 places still available. As off, the beginning of May, I need to open this trip up to Joe Public. I appreciate this is a busy year for GLUG with many trips planned, including The Cocos trip but if there is anyone remotely interested in this trip, diving these amazing Southern Red Sea reefs, please reserve your place as soon as possible. If you have any mates in your various other diving clubs, who may be interested, please feel free to pass this information on.

Feel free to get back to me with any questions.

Cheers

Charlie

New Trip Report

Posted by Jason on April 20th, 2008

We have a new trip report on the site, a two-hander by Martin and Ray, about the December trip to Tenerife. The more observant among you may have already seen the report, which has been up on the site for a month now, but I held off on posting about it till I could add the pictures.
Anyone else who is feeling similarly inspired can email their reports to me by clicking on the envelope above this post (next to my name) or by using the contacts page.

New gallery album

Posted by Jason on April 20th, 2008

Tube sponges

I’ve just added an album of photographs that I took on my recent trip to the Caribbean. It was the first time I was using my camera in the sea, so any comments or tips would be greatly appreciated.
The album is a bit short on pictures of fish (the blasted things kept moving) but fans of sponges and coral should be in seventh heaven.
You can see the pictures here.

2 places Weymouth 10-11 May

Posted by Corinne on April 11th, 2008

Calling all UK dry suit divers - I urgently need to fill the last two places on the Weymouth weekend.  It’s quite cheap for UK diving - £75 covers the diving and the B&B is around £25-28 per night.  Please contact me if you’d like to come along or if you’d like more information.

Rare Species Conservation Trust Fundraising Gala

Posted by Kirk Wylie on April 10th, 2008

Several people have asked for details on when the Rare Species Conservation Centre (the Trust is the UK registered charity which owns and operates the Centre) was holding our fundraiser, so I’m posting it up here. We’re holding it the evening of Saturday, May 17 at 6:30pm, at the zoo in Sandwich, Kent. The function will include a South-East Asian barbeque, cocktails, beer and wine, and special functions with the many nocturnal and crepuscular species at the RSCC.

B&B spaces in the area are filling up rapidly so if you’re thinking of attending and staying the night, I recommend you do so quickly so that you can make sure you get a room.

All funds raised on the evening will be going to the in-situ conservation projects we help to sponsor in South-East Asia, including helping such species as Sun Bears, Clouded Leopards, and Owston’s Palm Civet, all of which are on exhibit at the RSCC. Because many of the animals that the RSCT supports aren’t very well known in the West, projects to protect their natural habitats and protect them from poaching are often very desperate for funds. This is a particular problem at the moment with several small projects we sponsor in Cambodia, where an unexpected and immediate loss of funding from one large American charity has led to animal welfare suffering due to lack of money to provide food and veterinary care. In such countries, the price of your ticket can go a lot farther than it would in the UK, so every little bit really does help. Furthermore, your entire ticket price may be considered a charitable donation under the UK’s Gift Aid policies if you’re a UK taxpayer.

The print version of the invitation can be seen here: RSCT Fundraiser Invitation

If you’re interested in attending, you need to fill out the RSCT Invitation Response Form and send it into the zoo with payment.
Hopefully we’ll get a chance to see some of the GLUG people there!

EL QUSEIR - TRAINING OPPORTUNITY

Posted by Anna on April 2nd, 2008

I have managed to negotiate a couple more places on a trip to El Quseir (4-11 June) at a special price of £195. The price includes 7 days HB accommodation, 5 days of diving (two shore/RIB guided dives per day plus unlimited shore diving on the house reef) and transfers.

Any PADI training is available on request and the prices are very reasonable.

For example: a friend of mine, who is doing PADI OW referral, pays £245. The price includes the same items as for qualified diver above plus training and equipment. Additional cost is 35 Euros for the certificate.

Please e-mail me for more details if you are interested.

Training - Refresher

Posted by fredwynn on March 31st, 2008

I have had a number of e-mails from potential members asking about possible training - numbers sadly cannot justify an overseas dive trip. However, if any member would like a ‘refresher’ to diving - or, let’s say an Open Water Course - as your BSAC and PADI training co-ordnator and instructor - I would be happy to run a weekend course in Guernsey/UK if there was sufficient interest. I have a swimming pool for use here in Guernsey - plus some nice sheltered shore dive sites - but would need a minimum number of people.  For GLUG members - or potential members - I would be happy to do this at ‘cost’ price. If anyone is interested, just drop me a note.

Kind regards

Fred
